Sahara Dream: A Journey Through Morocco’s Desert, Culture, and History
Welcome to Marrakech! Your adventure begins with a warm arrival at the airport, where we’ll whisk you off to your accommodation in the heart of the city. After settling in, we’ll dive straight into the vibrant flavors of Morocco with a Food Tour. Wander through the lively streets, sampling traditional street foods, from crispy pastillas to freshly prepared tagines. This is a perfect way to kickstart your journey and immerse yourself in the culinary delights of the Red City. Enjoy a relaxed evening and settle in for the exciting days ahead.
Today, we’ll uncover the lesser-known corners of Marrakech’s old town. Start the day with a guided exploration of the Hidden Gems of the Medina, where winding alleys and colorful souks hold centuries of history. Later, we’ll visit some of the city’s most stunning gardens, including the tranquil Majorelle Garden and the expansive Menara Gardens, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s buzz. Take your time to soak in the natural beauty before enjoying a traditional Moroccan lunch. The afternoon is free for you to relax or explore more at your leisure.
After a nourishing breakfast, we’ll hit the road south towards the desert. Along the way, we’ll stop at Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the iconic “Hollywood of Morocco.” Here, we’ll explore the 14th-century kasbah, an ancient fortified village that’s been featured in films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After lunch, enjoy a fun scavenger hunt through the kasbah's narrow streets, where you’ll sharpen your bargaining skills, learn a few phrases in Darija (Moroccan Arabic), and immerse yourself in the bustling souks. In the evening, settle into a charming mudbrick kasbah for the night, where you’ll enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner and a restful sleep.
Rise early for breakfast and then continue our journey to the Dades Gorges, a stunning river valley carved through the High Atlas Mountains. The dramatic landscapes here are the perfect backdrop for photos and exploration. Along the way, we’ll visit the Amridil Kasbah, a 17th-century fortress that offers insight into the ancient way of life in southern Morocco. As we approach the desert, you’ll begin to feel the vastness of the landscape stretch out before you. After a day of exploration, we’ll stop at a local guesthouse to rest and enjoy a hearty meal.
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll visit a local association where you’ll learn about traditional Henna and cumin-making processes. Then, we’ll stroll through the nearby palm gardens, where natural rock formations create a magical atmosphere. As we head towards the Sahara, we’ll make a stop in Rissani, where you can learn about the Alaouit Dynasty and visit the founder’s mausoleum.
Finally, the moment you’ve been waiting for arrives – Merzouga! As the sand dunes come into view, prepare to be amazed by the vastness of the Sahara. Drop off your bags at the desert riad, then hop on camels for a trek across the dunes to our Bedouin camp. Enjoy a mesmerizing desert sunset, followed by traditional tea, music, and a delicious Moroccan feast under the stars.
Wake up early to witness the sunrise over the dunes – a truly magical experience you’ll never forget. After breakfast, we’ll make our way to Ouarzazate, a city famously known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert. On the way, we’ll drive through the Valley of One Thousand Kasbahs, passing breathtaking landscapes. Once in Ouarzazate, we’ll stop for a reflection session where you can share your experiences and thoughts thus far, connecting with the group and the journey ahead.
It’s time to head back to Marrakech, but not before stopping along the way to admire more of Morocco’s fascinating history. We’ll visit the Amridil Kasbah once again, to gain deeper insight into the ancient life of the southern region. The Road of One Thousand Kasbahs will offer plenty of opportunities to photograph the picturesque landscapes and learn about the desert's history. Once we arrive in Marrakech, take some time to appreciate the intricate architecture around the city, from the majestic palaces to the vibrant souks. In the evening, enjoy a festive dinner at Jemaa el-Fna, the UNESCO World Heritage square, where you’ll find street performers, food stalls, and a lively atmosphere that perfectly encapsulates the energy of Marrakech.
Begin your final full day in Morocco by visiting one of the most authentic spice shops in Marrakech, where you’ll learn about the important role of herbs and spices in local culture. Next, we’ll head to the Bin Youssef Madrasa, a stunning 12th-century Islamic school and one of the finest examples of Moroccan architecture. After some time for exploration and shopping (and learning the art of bargaining like a local), we’ll dedicate the afternoon to volunteering with a local association. We’ll engage in fun activities for children and women, empowering them through interaction, games, and meaningful conversations. This is a great way to give back and connect with the local community. The day ends with a closing ceremony, where we’ll reflect on the journey together and say goodbye to Morocco in the traditional Moroccan way.
On your final day, we’ll bid Morocco a heartfelt farewell. After an early breakfast, we’ll head to the Marrakech Menara International Airport for your departure. As you board your flight, take a moment to reflect on the incredible experiences, friendships, and memories you've created during your time in this magical land. With a group photo and final hugs from Team Morocco, your epic adventure will come to a close, but the memories of Morocco’s beauty and culture will stay with you forever.
